THE SORT Method™ | ESSENTFLOW™ by Shae

Before you build anything — a business, a relationship, a life — you have to know which self you're building from. THE SORT Method™ is the structured discernment process at the heart of ESSENTFLOW™. It is not a personality test. It is not a values exercise. It is the practice of learning to tell the difference between what is native to you and what was installed — so that everything you create from this point forward is built on actual ground.

The work is not self-improvement. The work is discernment — sorting native from installed.

Why This Exists

The Problem THE SORT Method™ Solves

Most identity work assumes you know who you were before. High-capacity Black women often don't — because the installation happened early.

The dominant language around identity work — "come back to yourself," "return to who you were," "remember your authentic self" — assumes there is a remembered former self to return to. A version of you that existed before the pressure arrived.

For many high-capacity Black women, that frame does not fit. The installation happened before the Native Self had space to form. Code-switching, gender expectations, professional survival, and rooms that required smallness arrived first. You didn't suppress a self you remembered. You built an entire life on what was installed — and called it yourself, because you never knew anything else existed.

THE SORT Method™ was built for that experience. Not return. Not recovery. First arrival.

The Distinction That Changes Everything

Suppression

A self that was present and then pushed down. The work is recovery — going back to what was lost.

Identity Installation

Borrowed identity replacing the Native Self before it fully formed. There is no "before" to return to. The work is First Arrival — not homecoming.

THE SORT Method™

The structured process for telling the difference between native and installed — in real time, across all domains of life.

The Framework

What THE SORT Method™ Does

Four moves. One direction: underneath — to what was always there before any of it arrived.

S

Step One

Surface the Signal

The Incongruence — the felt sense that something is fundamentally off even when everything looks right — is not a malfunction. It is your Native Self signaling its presence. The first move of THE SORT Method™ is learning to recognize the signal instead of managing it, numbing it, or pushing through it. You cannot sort what you cannot feel.

O

Step Two

Observe the Origin

Every belief, value, pattern, and way of moving through the world has an origin. Some of it is native — born from your own direct experience and inner knowing. Some of it was installed — placed there by rooms that required a specific kind of person, by systems that rewarded performance, by survival strategies that made sense once and never got updated. The second move is developing the practice of tracing origins without judgment.

R

Step Three

Reckon with the Installation

This is the hardest move. Reckoning is not judgment. It is honest accounting — sitting with what was installed and acknowledging that it is not native, even when it feels like you, even when others have praised it, even when it is what kept you safe. The Installed Self served a purpose. Reckoning honors that purpose while releasing its authority over your future. This step has no shortcut.

T

Step Four

Trust What Is Native

After the surfacing, the observing, the reckoning — this is where the building begins. Not the rebuilding of a better Installed Self. Not an improved performance. The act of beginning to extend trust to what has been confirmed as native: your actual values, your actual knowing, your actual pace. This is where First Arrival happens. This is the ground everything else is built on.

Where THE SORT Method™ Lives

THE SORT Method™ is the active practice inside the ESSENCE phase — and it continues throughout all three phases of ESSENTFLOW™.

ESSENTFLOW™ · PHASE 1

ESSENCE

Where THE SORT Method™ begins

THE SORT Method™ is the primary tool of ESSENCE. This is where you develop the discernment practice — learning to tell the difference between what is native and what was installed. The direction is not forward. It is underneath.

ESSENTFLOW™ · PHASE 2

FOUNDATION

Where SORT informs what gets built

FOUNDATION builds infrastructure around what THE SORT Method™ confirmed as native. Systems, offers, and structures are created from real ground — not around what the room expected, but around what is actually true.

ESSENTFLOW™ · PHASE 3

FLOW

Where SORT becomes instinct

In FLOW, discernment is no longer effortful — it is practiced. THE SORT Method™ becomes the ongoing capacity to catch installation as it attempts to re-enter, and to return to native ground without starting over.

What THE SORT Method™ Is Not

Clarity about what this is requires clarity about what it is not.

Not This

A personality framework

THE SORT Method™ does not tell you what type of person you are. It does not produce a profile or a category. It produces discernment — the ongoing capacity to tell native from installed in real time.

Not This

A one-time process

Discernment is not a destination. It is a practice. The SORT moves repeat — not because the work keeps failing, but because the Native Self keeps deepening. Each pass reveals more.

Not This

Therapy or clinical intervention

THE SORT Method™ is an educational methodology. It is not therapy, mental health treatment, or a substitute for clinical care. It is discernment work — and it is offered as exactly that.

Not This

Spiritual bypassing

This is not "just be yourself" repackaged. The SORT Method™ takes seriously the structural, historical, and relational conditions that produced the installation — and does not pretend that awareness alone resolves what was built over decades.

"You cannot build from native ground until you know what is native. You cannot know what is native until you have sorted. THE SORT Method™ is the sorting."

Research Foundation

Built on Documented Research

THE SORT Method™ is grounded in 17 years of autoethnographic longitudinal research on identity incongruence in high-capacity Black women, and builds on the existing scholarly work in Black women's identity, the Superwoman Schema, and identity-based motivation.

The Superwoman Schema, coined by Dr. Cheryl Woods-Giscombé, forms part of the research foundation for this work. ESSENTFLOW™ builds on her contributions alongside 17 years of autoethnographic longitudinal research on identity incongruence. THE SORT Method™ extends this work by providing the developmental methodology — not just naming the pattern of suppression and performance, but providing the discernment process for sorting native from installed at the experiential level.

Begin the Work

Start with Where You Actually Are

THE SORT Method™ begins with knowing your capacity state. The Capacity Mirror Assessment reveals where you are right now — and which phase of the ESSENTFLOW™ work applies to you.

You cannot sort from a place you can't see clearly. Begin with clarity.
